Tell Senator Chase Not to Use the Gov to Censor Reading

This week Virginia State Senator Amanda Chase is using her position as a bully pulpit and wants to use the government to force her religious and moral views on the unsuspecting public. Because she isn't getting her way, she is using threats and abuse. She recently called for school librarians in her district of Chesterfield to lose their jobs because she finds books like “Eleanor & Park” to be pornographic, or in her words “X-rated”. She also called for books on the schools summer reading list to be banned from school libraries. Senator Chase believes that she knows better than educated librarians who have dedicated their lives to helping children learn and grow, and the ease that she calls for their dismissal is incredibly disturbing.

This fight began earlier this year when a mother with one child in the school system became enraged at the diversity offered in the summer reading list, thus forcing the schools to alter the list in an attempt to appease her. Chesterfield County Schools serve close to 60,000 school children from various backgrounds and experiences; the reading list was created to offer a variety of choice for these students. However Senator Chase says that only books that she approves of should be offered by the schools, a notion both dangerous and reminiscent of darker days in history.
