Don't Exclude School Libraries in Florida!

The governor and Senate Republicans have announced important changes they want to make to the Best and Brightest Scholarship program. At FAME, we believe that eliminating the SAT/ACT metric and instead looking at individual educator performance is a good change. The governor and Senate Republicans have announced important changes they want to make to the Best and Brightest Scholarship program. At FAME, we believe that eliminating the SAT/ACT metric and instead looking at individual educator performance is a good change. However, their proposed changes miss something very important: they are continuing to exclude school library/media specialists from this important program.

The Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) needs your help reaching the Florida Legislature and Governor DeSantis with an important message about school librarians.

Can you help fix this problem and ask the Florida Legislature to broaden the definition of who is an educator to include school library/media specialists?

At FAME, we know that school media centers are the largest classroom in the school. We know that school library media specialists are the educators responsible for all students in the school. They are Teachers who focus on reading enhancement, interventions, and the research skills required in Florida's English-Language Arts standards. School librarians are Reading Coaches for students, Team Resource Teachers, and Technology Trainers for teachers and students, too.

Please join us by contacting your members of the Florida state House and Senate to ask that they support the inclusion of school library/media specialists - as well as other teachers and educators currently not included - in Best and Brightest participation by amending the definition to include “Other instructional personnel, including school library/media specialists as defined by s.1012.01(2)(b)-(d), F.S.”. If you believe like we do that they should be recognized as such, please take this important action today.
