OCPS Students Must Have The Freedom To Read
I am writing to you today because I am concerned by recent actions by this Board and others in District Leadership that dictate what OCPS students can access from school libraries. The Supreme Court has ruled that the First Amendment of our Constitution prohibits schools from removing materials from library shelves based on viewpoint or content. For our students to be fully supported at school and successful in the world, it is imperative that our schools are places where all voices and experiences are represented. I believe that OCPS leaders must follow their own book challenge policy BEFORE a book is to be removed from the school library. Hastily removing a book solely to appease a single agitator or parent is a grave disservice to the students that book is intended to serve. I also believe that the Board and District must remain 100% transparent during the book review process and ensure a number of viewpoints and experienced media specialists are represented when the challenge committee is formed. As a responsible citizen of Orange County, I understand that if I find a book to be inappropriate for my family, I have the opportunity to choose a different book from the many available through our school library systems. I support the rights of parents to choose books that are appropriate for their families, and I’m highly concerned with District Leadership alone censoring the reading materials available in OCPS libraries.
